Ibadan in Mourning as Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, Dies at 90 Just Two Days After His Birthday

Ibadan has lost a royal gem. His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, passed away today, Monday, July 7, 2025. He died peacefully just two days after his 90th birthday. The entire Ibadanland is mourning deeply.

Oba Olakulehin became the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024. His reign lasted just under a year. But in that short time, he left a powerful legacy. He ruled with calmness, wisdom, and a strong love for his people.

Born in Okugbaja village near Akanran in 1935, Oba Olakulehin had a humble start. He attended primary school in Ibadan. He worked as a teacher before joining Yaba Technical Institute. His passion for service led him to many great roles.

In 1970, he joined the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers. He rose to the rank of Major before retiring in 1979. Afterward, he became a successful entrepreneur in printing and bakery. His businesses were based right here in Ibadan.

He also served in politics and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1992. Oba Olakulehin chaired the House Committee on the Nigerian Army. He was known for honesty, integrity, and service. These values followed him into traditional leadership.

Oba Olakulehin rose through the ranks of Ibadan’s unique chieftaincy system. He served as Mogaji, Balogun, and many other titles. His journey to the throne was long but well-earned. Every title he held prepared him for the crown.

When he finally became Olubadan, Ibadan rejoiced. His coronation was graced by Governor Seyi Makinde and many dignitaries. Elders and youths alike celebrated the new king. He brought unity and peace during his short but impactful reign.

His death today has left a heavy silence across Oyo State. Families, traders, elders, and politicians are all grieving. Oba Olakulehin was not just a king; he was a father to Ibadan. His absence will be felt deeply for years.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, you were a true monarch. Thank you for your service to Ibadan. You will never be forgotten.
